"Climate Adaptation in the Nordic Countries: Science, Practice, Policy" International conference in Stockholm, Sweden, 8-10 November 2010

Climate change is rapidly becoming a reality to which society has to adapt. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is critically important but it will not prevent many of the near to medium-term impacts of climate change. Scientists, planners and policymakers have started to address the adaptation challenge. This conference sets out to meet a growing demand for knowledge sharing on climate adaptation in the Nordic countries.

The purpose of the conference is to explore the links between adaptation science, practice, and policy. Taking an interdisciplinary perspective and involving stakeholders, the aim of the conference is to deliver insights for a socially relevant research agenda that advances the emerging science of adaptation and meets the needs of practitioners and policymakers. In addition, we expect the conference to stimulate the preparation of peer-reviewed articles for consideration by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The conference will address key issues such as uncertainty about local impacts of climate change, the social and institutional processes of adaptation, and the role of policies at national and international levels.

A NORDIC FOCUS
The conference focuses on Nordic aspects of climate adaptation, with a wide interpretation of what the term Nordic can mean. It might refer to the geographical origin of the empirical material, or to types of vulnerability that are particular to the region, such as those associated with northern climates or those that result from the nature of Nordic countries' economies. Nordic aspects of climate adaptation might also include the social and institutional context in which adaptation takes place (the "Nordic model"), or even whether or not there is a Nordic approach to climate adaptation.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The conference invites scholars interested in climate risk, vulnerability and adaptation in a Nordic setting. Practitioners and policymakers are explicitly invited to stimulate discussion and develop ideas that link the realms of science, practice and policy. Participation from outside the Nordic region is also encouraged.

THE CONFERENCE
The conference will feature keynote speakers and presentations of scientific results and field experiences relevant to adaptation in the Nordic countries. The first day of the conference will be dedicated to the science of adaptation, the second day will emphasise practitioners' perspectives, and the third day will concentrate on policy issues. The conference will host a mix of plenary and parallel sessions. At the end of the second day the City of Stockholm will welcome participants to a reception in the world famous Stockholm City Hall.

SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE - Abstracts due 1 August 2010
We invite you to submit abstracts for oral presentations in the parallel sessions, as well as abstracts for posters. We seek high-quality research, as well as highly relevant input from practitioners and policymakers. Abstracts will be evaluated by a scientific committee and external experts. We also welcome your suggestions for parallel sessions, especially those that bring together knowledge from multiple locations and research projects. Session proposals should include a description of the session (topic, motivation, format) and abstracts for each suggested presentation. All parallel sessions will be 90 minutes long.

Abstracts are invited on all issues relevant to climate adaptation in the Nordic countries, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Theory and methods for adaptation research
  • Scenario-based impact studies
  • Vulnerability assessment and vulnerability indicators
  • Adaptation as a social process (including cultural factors, values, institutions)
  • Climate information, climate services
  • Adaptation planning and decision tools
  • Adaptation policy development
  • The economics of adaptation
  • Adaptation in urban regions
  • Adaptation in rural areas
  • Adaptation and natural resources (forests, agriculture, water, marine environment)
  • Adaptation in the tourist sector
  • Adaptation and human health
  • Insurance, finance and adaptation
  • The role of non-state actors in adaptation (civil society, private sector)
  • Gender perspectives on adaptation
  • Nordic adaptation within an EU and global context
  • Links between adaptation and mitigation

The call for abstracts is available on www.nordicadaptation2010.net. Abstracts must be submitted through this website by 1 August 2010 at the latest (no e-mail).

ORGANIZERS
The conference is an initiative of the Nordic Climate change Adaptation research Network (NORDCLAD-Net), which is funded by the Nordic Top-level Research Initiative, Effect Studies and Adaptation to Climate Change. The conference is coordinated and co-funded by the Stockholm Environment Institute and the Swedish research programme Mistra-SWECIA. It is also co-funded by the Swedish research council FORMAS and by the PLAN project, University of Oslo.

NORDCLAD-Net is a scientific network of five Nordic institutes:

  • Stockholm Environment Institute, Sweden
  • MILEN (Miljøendringer og bærekraftig energi), University of Oslo, Norway
  • The National Environmental Institute (NERI) and the Coordination Unit for Research in Climate Change Adaptation (KFT), Aarhus University, Denmark
  • Western Norway Research Institute, Norway
  • Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), Finland

SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE
